Catalyzing Team Dynamics: Revolutionizing Athletic Collaboration

Project Overview

Imagine you are all set to register for an exciting relay race, but there's a problem: You don’t have team mates to form a team. It's tough to find someone who's matches your desired expectations. The Relay App solves for this problems. It helps athletes connect with team member who meet their expectations. With the Relay App, forming a team for a race is easy and fun.

The Relay App lets you discover people who have the stats you need, so you can focus on building a winning team together. Goodbye to the stress of finding teammates by reaching out to them manually, wandering the participant list in a haste, or even worse is being forced to participate with someone who doesn’t match your expectations. With the Relay App, you focus on your core activity, rather than stressing about team building and having a great time on the track.

Approach Workflow

  • The Relay App was intended for triathlon event, Our journey began with a key step: talking to athletes participating in relay races – runners, swimmers, cyclists. We wanted to hear about their experiences and struggles in forming relay teams.
  • A common point of expression by every athlete we spoke with was how frustrated they were with the difficulty of putting a team together. These conversations revealed common frustrations and desires: the need for compatibility, trustworthiness, and a sense of belonging within a team.
  • Thereon, we could build user personas and empathy maps, which made the stories clearer. These personas became our guide, leading us through the design process with a deep understanding of our users' needs.
  • Each persona exhibited different challenges and possibilities. We could use this learning in our brainstorming phase, ready to turn insights into practical solutions.
  • To ensure a seamless user experience, the App is thoughtfully designed. Features that simplify the process of forming relay teams and connecting with potential partners were the main focus.

Design - Mobile Application

Phone Number and OTP verification

  • The user registration or login flow was intended to be common. Using a phone number. This is the bare basic that is needed to get on to the relay application and we could validate their number using the OTP verification. If the user is new, they would be redirected to a form. If they are already registered, they would be taken to the dashboard having functionalities of team formation and finding athletes.

Design Psychology

  • Cognitive Load Reduction: Simplifying the registration/login process to just phone number and OTP verification minimizes cognitive load for users. This reduces the mental effort required to complete the task.

Registration Form

  • At the registration screen, users provide essential details in two steps. Firstly, they share personal information such as name, email, age, and gender, along with uploading a profile picture. Next, they select their involvement in relay disciplines (Swim, Bike, Run) and input their best times. Additionally, toggle switches allow users to indicate if they wish to be a captain or contribute funds for participation.

Design Psychology

  • Goal-Gradient Effect: Encouraging to continue the registration flow by showing completed and remaining steps.
  • Cognitive Ease: This is about making things easy to understand. In the registration form, it's like using switches for users to pick their choices. This makes it simple for users to make decisions without thinking too hard. It helps them finish the form quickly

Search Page

  • On the search page, users can find the participants they want to pair up with for the relay. The screen shows the list of athletes who have registered on the platform. The search page even has filters based on athlete’s discipline, gender, whether they wish to be a captain and if they wish to fund their participation

Design Psychology

  • Affordance: The plus button on each profile serves as an affordance, indicating to users that they can directly add the profiles to their team. This design choice enhances user engagement by making the action clear and intuitive without the need for additional instruction.

Quick View and Filter

  • Clicking the "View" button provides users with a quick overview of a participant's details, facilitating informed decisions and connections. Additionally, the filter button allows users to easily narrow down their search by selecting specific criteria such as athlete’s discipline, gender, whether they wish to be a captain and if they wish to fund their participation.

Design Psychology

  • Information Hierarchy: The Quick View card prioritises essential details, helping users make informed decisions quickly without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Efficiency: The filter button streamlines the search process, enabling users to quickly narrow down their options to find the most relevant participants. This efficiency enhances user experience by saving time and effort in finding suitable relay partners.

Connection Page

  • The connection page features three tabs: Received, Accepted, and Declined. In the Received tab, users can manage connection requests received from athletes on the platform. Each connection request has buttons: "Accept" and "Decline", the first accepting the request and the latter declining the request. This screen helps users efficiently manage their connections within the platform.

Design Psychology

  • Fitts's Law: Despite being at the top, the buttons are still easily accessible as they are within the user's field of view. This adherence to Fitts's Law ensures that users can quickly target and interact with the buttons without having to search for them, enhancing usability and efficiency.

Notification Screen

  • Users receive notifications when someone confirms a connection request or sends a team confirmation request.

Design Psychology

  • Affordance: The "Add to Team" button is clear visual cue implies its function, making it intuitive for users to understand that clicking it will add the requester to their team.

Conclusion

The relay app has a web version too. The same design strategy was used for the web design. Whether you're teaming up, chatting with others, or updating your info, you'll experience the same smooth, clear, and user-friendly design on any device. The application was implemented using a responsive web layout approach and in frameworks that could be used cross platform applications.

The Relay App is the perfect solution for joining relay races hassle-free. Finding the perfect athlete team member is made easy. The app is designed with users in mind, ensuring a smooth experience from signing up to managing teams. And whether you're using your phone or computer, the experience remains equally great.
